THE BEGINNING OF A LEGEND

The young Ramlee a carefree and mischievous boy shows a keen interest in and a passion for music. His dream is to become a star. In his hometown, Penang, he’s fallen for a young girl, Azizah, who becomes his muse.

A few years later, while performing at a fair, P.Ramlee as he is now known is approached by a director from Malay Film Productions, B.S. Rajhans, who is impressed by his melodious voice and musical talent. He offers Ramlee the opportunity to pursue his career in Singapore. Ramlee is torn between fulfilling his dream and deserting his muse. Azizah gives him her blessing to pursue his dream knowing her family will never accept their love.

With high hopes and expectations Ramlee begins his journey to Singapore accompanied by his best friend Sukardi, early one morning of the first day of Syawal. The first time they step into the Jalan Ampas Studios they are warmly welcomed by B.S. Rajhans and very quickly Ramlee’s talent becomes apparent and is admired by many.

D. Harris, an actor and father of two attractive young daughters, Junaidah and Junainah, devises a plan to wed P.Ramlee to his divorced daughter, Junaidah. The plan succeeds and the two are married. After a while Junaidah, develops feelings of jealousy and loneliness as Ramlee becomes more and more popular. Their marriage is on the rocks.

Without realising it Ramlee has attracted the attention of Norizan, who leaves her privileged royal lifestyle, all for the sake of P. Ramlee

ACT 2
THE GOLDEN ERA OF A LEGEND

Accompanied by his second wife Norizan Ramlee attends a grand reception celebrating their marriage hosted by the Shaw Brothers at which they announce that Ramlee is to direct his own film. This film establishes him as a respected artist and director and his personal life becomes a hot topic for the press and public.

To Norizan, Ramlee’s growing prestige contrasts with his lack of responsibility as a husband. This is uncovered by a reporter investigating P. Ramlee’s private life. Pressured by accusations, Ramlee verbally attacks Norizan, creating a rift between them that ends in divorce.

In a studio music session rehearsal, P.Ramlee, broken hearted over Norizan, is attracted to Saloma. Romantic feelings develop between the two and for the first time P.Ramlee is wooing someone who could bring back the nostalgia of the girl who first became his muse. They marry and begin a new life.

The political unrest in Singapore contributes to the Shaw Brothers’ decision to close the Jalan Ampas Studio. Ramlee and Saloma move to Kuala Lumpur and they transfer to Merdeka Studios in Ulu Klang where they continue making films for many years.
